Biography John G. North was born Johan Gurenius Nordtvedt in Norway December 15, 1826 and came to California in 1849 by ship. He lived primarily in San Francisco and was a shipbuilder. He opened North's Shipyard in San Francisco's Potrero District in 1860 and is credited with constructing some 236 hulls including the steamers Chrysopolis, Capitol, and Reform.
